Impact of Scholarship

This scholarship would provide me an education opportunity by giving me the necessary tools to eliminate the financial barriers that prohibit me from going to college. I have been admitted and plan to attend the University of Texas at Austin where I will major in accounting and potentially go on to pursue a doctoral degree. I want to become the Chief Financial Officer and teacher of my community so that I can increase the financial literacy in my neighborhood. I am confident that I will make my community better and help eliminate the same barriers I had.

PERSONAL EVALUATION

What have you gained, personally, from participating in your departmentʼs program?
I personally gained social skills. Since a child, I've always been recognized as the leader. From being the eldest of four boys or being the captain of the basketball team , people have always listened to me . However, the flaw in my leadership capabilities was that I often did not hear the people that followed me out. With, this last leadership opportunity , communication is imperative and I had to listen to them and it made leading them so much easier . These social cues I learned to pick up on and ability to listen to people will help me a lot in the real world. It would allow me to work with a team of individuals to accomplish a goal. Teamwork is how one changes the world.

Why do you feel you should be awards this scholarship?
Personal investment is the foundation for a person to achieve their goals. I plan to invest in myself because its only right to do so. However, the investment in myself is limited and I need others to investment in me as well.

At a first glance people see that my mom has a college degree and a good job and think we can afford college no problem. However, if they take a closer look, these people could see that this couldnʼt be further from the truth. With all my brother and I living with her, she supports a family of six. She is currently the only source of income in the household which means she take cares of all the expenses as well as bills. This also indicates that we, as a family, have no extra money for college. If I could get this scholarship for college I could not only eliminate a barrier keep me from me going to college, but I can also take a financial burden off her shoulders. Despite having a financial need for this scholarship, I am also a prevalent leader in my school and community that this scholarship can allow me to continue to be. I have held many positions in numerous campus organizations including: President of DECA, Vice President of BPA, and captain of the basketball team. Through academic accomplishments, I was selected and inducted into the National Honor Society and elected President. Although my scholastic accomplishments and involvement in school organizations may be impressive, I am most proud of my business I co-founded called Dice Clothing Company. I created it with the two other individuals in the community to promote positivity amongst our generation as well as to encourage them to take risk and defy the odds.

This scholarship could also help me accomplish my future goals. I have been admitted and plan to attend the University of Texas at Austin where I will major in accounting and potentially go on to pursue a doctoral degree. I want to become a Chief Financial Officer. I also plan to be educator in my community so that I can increase the financial literacy in my neighborhood. I am confident that this action could show my siblings to not let anything deter them from their dreams and that they can achieve anything they want. In closing, while my goals seem beneficial for my neighborhood and community, I cannot achieve this without the contribution of others. The execution of my goals will have a 100% return on investment and much more for the community.
